It's been 2 years that I've posted and I almost lost the zeal to write any further, when one fine day I realized that I can do much better than just working for Accenture :P Without dragging this story any longer, I would like to write about the first movie I watched in 2011 starring Rani Mukherjee, Vidya Balan named No one killed Jessica.
Vidya Balan plays the role of Jessica's sister Sabrina and Rani Mukherjee is a reporter for NDTV. Sabrina wakes up with a call from one of Jessi's friends saying she's admitted in a hospital and that someone has shot her at a party. She rushes to the hospital and finds out that she has been allegedly shot by a politician's son! And before she could reconcile with the fact, Jessi dies.. and there begins the plot.
Sabrina, begins her quest to find the truth behind the murder. She approaches all possible sources who had attended the party that night and all her attempts go in vain, as no one is ready to risk their life by letting out the truth. Although, few of Jessi's friends, help Sabrina by giving a statement to the police. Meanwhile, the politician tries to bribe all the witnesses present at the party and most of them fall prey to the money given by him.
On the other hand, Rani Mukherjee is busy tracking a cover story of the Kargil War and receives an appreciation for the same. She'll be given an offer to cover Jessica Lal's murder trial and she rejects it without giving any thought to it. One of the reporters of NDTV, covering this story arranges an interview with Sabrina airing on TV. She lets out her concerns on the trial and lives with a hope that justice will be done.
As time passes by, the number of trials done by the court increases drastically and each time, the ratio of witnesses on Sabrina's side goes down. Sabrina's parents' lose hope in course of time. Her mom who still in a shock, loses her life. By this time, Sabrina, realizes that its been ages that she has been fighting for justice and their is no one to question law in this country. She behaves indifferently toward the trial and leads her life by taking care of her dad.
As expected, Rani, reads the news and it dawns on her that she should taken up the assignment. The movie picks up pace, as the investigations on the case begins (thanks to tehelka which exposes reality on the face of it). The public starts to post their views on the trial thereby forcing the politicians to take action against the criminal. Albeit, this news reaches Sabrina, she refuses to fight for justice as she has lost faith in law. Rani cajoles Sabrina to participate in the peace march to be held by the people of India in the remembrance of her sister Jessica and to bring out a change in the functioning of our system. Finally, the trial which was dismissed in the lower court projecting it to be baseless, moves to the high court. The high court announces lifetime imprisonment to the politician's son. Sabrina, rejoices the moment and starts to lead a normal life..!!
On the whole, the movie had a lot to question on the way the political system works in India and that justice can be achieved by being united.
P.S : A good watch and a decent start to my new year :)
